A log cabin is simply a small abode made of logs.
It is differentiated from log houses in such as manner that the former refers only to the more rustic, smaller cabins usually found in the woods made of conventional lumber while the latter is technically similar to log cabins except that they are much bigger and are made from logs that are either milled or handcrafted. At present however, when you view websites in the Internet to get details about log homes or cabins, the two are referred to as the same thing.
The United States is known to have big forests and woods, which house these numerous log cabins. One of the enduring symbols of American history is the log cabin. Who would forget that Abraham Lincoln, even Andrew Jackson, was born in a log cabin? Unknown to many however, the log cabin loved by Americans is not their own invention but that of the Swedish settlers who took up camp in 1683 in Delaware. When they came to the U.S., they decided to build houses made of logs, having been used to it since Sweden is known to have plenty of trees, something the United States also have, which is just perfect for their plan. And so that marked the beginning of log cabins in the U.S.

These log house/cabin producers, particularly those that belong in the Log Homes Council, have agreed to produce a manual for construction, to follow a strict and uniform code of ethics and a unified and certified program for log grading.
It is interesting to note that currently, there are over 500,000 log homes in the U.S. This count accounts for 7% of the whole custom home building market in the U.S. Currently, more and more people are choosing log cabins/houses to be their homes. It is fast becoming popular among the more practical ones and even for those with money. There are also a lot of luxury cabin homes that were constructed. During the middle of 1980, around 15,000 log cabins/houses were sold every year. By the year 2003, this number has greatly increased by 73%. At present, there are already over 26,000 log houses that are sold yearly. That is almost double the original figures. This increase is attributed by experts to the choice of homeowners to have these log houses built as their primary residence. Before, log cabins or log homes are constructed only as vacation houses or hunting homes. Likewise, the earlier use of log cabins, especially if a formal house is built beside it, is as shelter for animals, a chicken coop or for other utility purposes.
