Whether it is your first home from an apartment or a rental or you are moving from one home to another everyone could use a few hints on strategies on making the move an easier one.
Let's try and make this move a little easier for you and the other members of your household.
First, let's make sure you start off in an organized fashion rather than throwing things in boxes and then getting to the new home and not knowing what is in every box or even which box should be placed in which room. Without some organization you will likely get everything packed up quickly but get to the new home and be lost for quite some time.
Make a list, I suggest a moving pad so that it is portable and can be taken to every part of the home easily including the exterior. You will use a simple numbering system that will simplify everything. Each box will be numbered and the number on your list will contain what is inside each box. Keep this list in a central location or with you at all times so you don't lose the one thing that is keeping you organized. You may want to keep it in a small "moving box" along with other essentials such as tape, markers, and other smaller moving items. This way you know everything is always together.
Make sure that you have loaded up on everything that you are going to need; things like packing or wrapping paper for breakables, boxes of all different sizes, tape, and bubble wrap. Your local U-Haul is a great place for wardrobe boxes, packing paper and bubble wrap as well as tape and dispensers. You can buy boxes from them as well. A great idea if you have just purchased a home and used a Realtor, ask them if they know someone else that has just moved that may be done with their boxes and would be happy to get them off of their hands. Whatever amount of boxes you think you will need, you will likely need more. There is always more inside your home than you really anticipate.
Either before the packing process starts or after the majority is done and you have a ton of extra items you really don't want to be moving to your new home, take those items and have a garage sale or give them to a local charity. Do not move things that you no longer use or want, you will get to the new place and not know what to do with it and then have to deal with extra unwanted items.
Be sure and try to keep boxes organized to room specific. If you are packing the kitchen for example; keep kitchen items in boxes marked "kitchen". You don't want to put a book in with your dishes because when you go to unpack you will have items that belong clear across the house and then having to haul it again to the proper room.
Boxes should all be clearly marked on the top and each side as to what room it should be placed. The person or persons doing the hauling of the boxes should not have to question where to place each box. Each box can have a sample of what is inside such as "linens" or "dishes" but your list will be more detailed. The more stuff you own the more important it is to be organized so that you can be settled more quickly.
