Plumbing Apprentice

The life of the plumbing apprentice will consist of a four year program split between college study and on the job training.

During a plumbing apprentice training program the candidate is likely to learn chemistry, electricity and mechanics. Welding, pipefitting, heating ventilation may also be included.

The salary of a plumbing apprentice is usually about half of what a fully qualified plumber would earn.

A vocational plumbing qualification can be gained through on site training and plumbing courses at a local college. Such training can take from two to five years to complete.

Twenty years ago copper pipe was the standard and only plumbing material used in plumbing jobs. Now, due to advances in construction technology plastic piping has been introduced as an alternative.

Many people get into an apprenticeship after attending plumbing school as well so that they can get more hands on experience.

Plumbing apprenticeships offer a comprehensive training program that will cover many aspects of the plumbing trade.

Many plumbers and pipefitters are members of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada.

A plumbing job is often located in a residential or commercial areas. Steam-fitting and pipe-fitting jobs are usually located in an industrial setting.

Many jobs in plumbing are created by the ever increasing demand for repair and maintenance to existing water systems in older buildings.
