Plumbing Materials

Twenty years ago copper pipe was the standard and only plumbing material used in plumbing jobs. Now, due to advances in construction technology plastic piping has been introduced as an alternative.

In case of any unexpected plumbing problems or emergencies it's always a good idea to have your own set of plumbing materials and tools stored away in your home.

Plumbing materials such as cork, wool felt, hair and asbestos are all known as insulators. Insulators are used in plumbing to protect people (and pets) from receiving burns from hot pipes.

Plastic piping is now becoming more popular as a plumbing material. Unlike copper, plastic piping is much more flexible, durable and easier to install.

Copper has always been a popular plumbing material because of its durability. Now plastic plumbing materials are available and are considered as an energy efficient option because plastic transfers less heat.

It's true to say that manufactures have stats to prove which is the best plumbing material for plumbing piping. However, because water conditions differ throughout the country it's seemingly impossible to claim which material is the best.

If you are looking for plumbing materials in large quantities then try a plumbing supply store or plumbing wholesaler, you should be able to purchase the materials you need at very completive price.

You should be able to find some basic everyday plumbing materials from your local hardware store. However, you should find a much larger selection of products from a large retail or plumbing supply store, and at a cheeper price.

The three most popular materials used for fresh water pipes are galvanized steel, brass, and copper. Each of these has fittings made form the same or similar material. Be aware that it is not good practice to interchange pipes and fittings made from different plumbing materials.

The method in which plumbing materials and fittings are joined together depends on the materials and fittings used. Plumbing materials are subjected of plumbing code requirements and fittings come in a multitude of shapes and sizes and each has a specific purpose.
