Independent Scaffolding

Access ladders should extend about 1 meter above the working platform of independent scaffolding in order to provide a handhold for people getting on and off.

All independent scaffolding requires bracing to help prevent them from collapsing.

Ensure any independents scaffolding is designed to carry the load from stored materials and equipment.

Before contractors allow their workers to use someone else’s independent scaffolding, they must make sure it is safe.

Scaffolders should always adopt a safe system of work during the erection, altering and dismantling of independent scaffolding.

Do not take up boards, move handrails or remove ties from independent scaffolding to gain access for work.

Independent scaffolding should be designed to prevent materials falling and be fitted with brickguards, netting or sheeting.

Jobs such as removing or installing guttering, installing replacement windows, painting or demolition work should usually be carried out from independent scaffolding or mobile access equipment.

Falls from a height, especially from independent scaffolding, continue to be the biggest killer on construction sites.

All independent scaffolding should be designed, erected, altered and dismantled by competent people, with all independent scaffolding work under the supervision of a ‘competent person’.
