Plastering Materials

The most important thing for all DIY tasks is a set of correct tools for plastering and plaster boarding.

Plastering is 100% about following a set recipe and set of techniques and you should follow them to the letter.

Any flecks of dried plaster in your buckets or on your equipment from previous sessions will later break off to contaminate future batches of plaster.

Plastering is an acquired skill and is best left to those with the acquired knowledge and experience.

A highly specialised form of plastering called Venetian Polished Plaster has rapidly grown in popularity.

Mixing is a very important phase in a plastering job. With the help of a mixer drill the mixing plaster can be made easily, especially if the quantity is large.

If you are interested in doing a lot of drywall jobs, it is worth investing in some tools like an assortment of joint knives, stilts, a taping banjo or some other special tools.

As with painting, plastering needs a base coat. This base/undercoat may need building up in 2 layers depending on the condition of the walls and the thickness of plaster needed to improve them.

Plaster is appreciated for its versatility, fire resistance and ability to reduce noise.

If you are a novice plasterer then you might prefer to start in a spare bedroom with an existing poor finish that can only be made better which will greatly reduce the stress on you. Remember, you can plaster skim the walls as many times as you like so you can always go over a not so perfect job later as you get better.
